New Camera: Zenit 412ls

I bought 2 new cameras. The first one is the Zenit 412ls, a russian made camera with decent optics so far. It is 35 mm fully manual save a light meter which I am not sure is reliable yet. although it looks plastic, the frame is solid metal construction. I could bludgeon someone with this bad boy in self defense. Here are some test shots I took on a rainy day. I had no flash with me.

My newest camera arrived today. I bought a Russian Cold War camera called the Smena 8M. I got it for a decent price compared with what some websites want. I know I am taking a risk no matter where I buy it from considering they are pretty old cameras. Yet, I am still excited and hopeful of the results. I just read the manual and threw a roll of 24 exp 200 iso film in it. I am hoping to fire off the roll at lunch tomorrow so that I can develop ASAP. I want to go on some serious photo ops this weekend and next. I do not want to bring a dud of a camera and feel sorry later. At minimum, I have a conversation piece on my shelf.

Lil' dune buggy

We went to the New Car Expo in Honolulu yesterday. They lay out all the new cars by brand for everyone to see with less sales pitch than a dealer. My favorite part was the classics that fill the outer corners of the hall. This time they had classic Chevys, Mustangs and really antiques from the 1920 and earlier. The best part for me was the original Mini Cooper Collection and the Volkswagens. Someday I will get my stuff togeather and get a VW. This time the one that really caught my eye was the Meyer Manx dune buggy.
My favorite!

This display was great. They had the whole camper laid out like it was already on a campsite.

This one look like it had been to hell and back. The left alone patina was something and the luggage was antique too.

The camera could not capture how awesome this paint job was.

I have taken a liking to the Sierra Nevada Brewery. They are a more than "green" brewery. They get as many locally grown ingredients as possible. They also create surplus energy between solar and composting gases that they put electricity back into the grid.
I am not a fan of their pale ale because I find the hops too strong compared with the other flavors. I really like the ESB style which is seasonal. In the mean time I found the Torpedo Extra IPA. The hops are manageable with a carmel malt flavor and the fact that it is 7.2% ABV is nice.

Found this beer from St. Petersburg, Russia at my local beer shop and since I have tried no.7 (export lager), I thought I would give it at try.
First of all, it is 500ml Wheat Beer. When I opened it up, it had the same peculiar sent as no.7. The beer was a bit cloudy like a Hefeweizen should. No.8 also had the clean, slightly citrus taste like most wheat beer. I guess Russia can make a decent beer.

Hog Island BBQ

Tried this restaurant on 11th Ave last Sunday for something different. I have not had Memphis BBQ before but this was not very good. You could see that the owner used chemical wood pellets because the bag was out in the open. At first I thought it was guinea pig pellet food until I read the bag. The service was a bit slow and there are no places to sit. We walked to the near by park and proceeded to eat. Tokki had the brisket sandwich with coleslaw topping and Tiger had the pulled pork plate with Scalloped potatoes and baked beans as the sides. The food had an overwhelming chemical smoke taste and Tokki said she kept tasting a gasoline like after taste. Later we both had heartburn and kept burping up that chemical. I would not recommend.
We have had Texas BBQ in Kaneohe and found that much better. They use real wood and not chemicals for flavor.

Chinese New Year 2010

I went to my first Chinese New Year Parade in Honolulu this year. In all my years being here, I never watched them from more than a distance in my car or on TV. I think this year had a magic to it because it was my year, the tiger.
The sights and sounds were amazing. We spent the afternoon in Chinatown with the food then parade. If you ever have a chance, please check a lion dance out.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy pt 6 of 3

Just finished An Another Thing by Eion Colfer for Douglas Adams. This book was supposed to be written off of notes by Douglas Adams.
I wanted to read this book because I had read the first five in the series, the last being about 1996. I had to skim summaries to remember exactly where the characters were when book five ended. I really wanted to like it as much as the others. I do not want to fault Mr. Colfer, but for some reason I did not enjoy the sixth as much as the other five. Maybe it was me. I loved the books as a teenager, but it was hard to get back into as an adult. If you read the series, then please read; if not, please do not pick this book up as you will be seriously confused.

Saw this at my favorite shop and had to try. From St. Petersburg, Russia, the beer has an unusual flavor and an even more unusual pull top. Despite being a bottle, it has a pull tab like an old aluminum can. I recommend you try just for the hell of it.

Eagerly Awaited

I have been pacing the apartment waiting to receive my latest camera, it looks like it may arrive today. I have been reluctant to venture into medium format film like 120 due to the rarity of developing. I have been using a Holga 135 for several months and have been getting better at it. I am used to my canon whose viewfinder focuses through the actual lens. The Holgas force you to judge the distance without that advantage.
When I saw a special online for one less than $20, I gave in to temptation. It has been a week since I ordered, but it feels like forever. I went to a local store and purchased 3 rolls of film to try. Tomorrow is a BBQ party in Waialua. Cross my fingers the weather is bright and sunny. I will probably not be able to post any of the pictures due to the cost of the scanning at the local developers.

Sometimes your brain goes back over the past and you remember some of the oddest things. Today I thought of Dungeons and Dragons. Yes, laugh. But it was the camaraderie of a few people trying to accomplish something together. It was a lot of laughing and joking too. We may not have been the jocks or debonaire, but it made our lives a little more bearable when spending it with like minded individuals. Sometimes I want to play again, but circumstances have changed and I am at the age where I will attract far more stigma than a geeky teenager, but it is fun to remember and imagine.

Golden Half Camera

Rabbit bought me this little wonder for Christmas. It is fun and am waiting to develop my first roll. It takes two pictures per frame effectively stretching your dollar by doubling a roll of film. It turns 24 exposure film into 48. It can handle a 36 exposure roll so I get 72 pics out of one roll. As you can see it is very small yet even has a hot shoe attachment. Flash was not included but I have my own. I am excited about seeing the results.
